Top tips to encourage empathy & kindness skills with the Thomas & Friends brand

Welcome aboard, parents and caregivers!

In Early Childhood Education and Care settings, Educators are the brilliant signals guiding children’s learning along the tracks. But at home, you are the main conductor helping your child navigate their early learning journey.

The Thomas & Friends brand has partnered with Care For Kids Australia to embark on an exciting journey of discovery, as we reveal the potential developmental benefits of Kindness, Imaginative Play and Friendship for the early learning journey.

The second stop on the learning journey is Kindness Station, where Thomas and Cranky teach us invaluable lessons about kindness and empathy. Just like Cranky lifting heavy cargo, sometimes people carry emotional loads that make them feel a bit down.

Our #1 blue engine inspires us to explore the wonderful ideas of kindness and empathy to brighten anyone’s day.

Here are Care For Kids top tips for encouraging kindness and empathy:

Empower Through Assistance

At Kindness Station, let's guide your little ones in understanding the importance of asking for and offering help. Help them identify moments when they, or a friend, might need assistance, fostering a culture of support and compassion

Encourage thoughtful language by prompting children to rephrase their words in more considerate ways. Engage them in conversations that explore alternative, kinder ways of expressing themselves, nurturing empathy and understanding.

Turn-Taking and Cooperation

Model the essence of cooperation and turn-taking during playtime. Describe your actions aloud, showcasing the beauty of playing together and sharing resources harmoniously. Through your guidance, children learn the value of collaboration and consideration for others.

Kindness Through Words and Actions

During play, encourage questions that dive into the needs and interests of others. Build upon these interactions to demonstrate care and empathy, fostering an environment where kindness is not just spoken but actively practiced.

Celebrate and Encourage Kindness

Highlight and praise your child's kind actions, reinforcing positive behavior and nurturing a desire to spread more kindness. By acknowledging their kindness, you inspire them to continue these thoughtful gestures.

Respectful Appreciation of Differences

Guide children to appreciate and talk respectfully about differences. Help them explore the joy and positivity in diversity, cultivating an environment of inclusivity and understanding.
