Offering kindy programs for 3 and 4 year olds, Deadly Kindy Burragah is a unique centre with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture at the fore. The early intervention model combines access to health and social services – such as speech or occupational therapy – with early education.
The centre is designed to instil a strong sense of Indigenous identity in the jarjums. They learn about culture, community and country in an inclusive, safe and flexible play-based learning environment.
The outdoor play area provides the jarjums with a connection to country through the bush tukka gardens and sustainability education. The outside area is spacious, thoughtfully-designed and well-resourced to cater to the learning activities and experiences that take place each day. With ample outdoor play time, the educators also plan play, music, drama, literature and visual arts activities.
For families with no access to transport, they can also access the centre’s free bus service.
The centre offers a large car park on-site, public transport just outside the centre and a free bus service for families with no access to transport. Why not book a tour of this convenient and culturally proud centre today?

About the curriculum

About the curriculum
The curriculum at Deadly Kindy is designed to set the jarjums up for success at school and beyond with a lifelong love of learning. With Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture at the forefront, the experienced educators provide a safe and healthy learning environment where the culture and learning thrive together.
The play-based curriculum uses the eight Aboriginal Ways of Learning as the framework for the daily activities and experiences. By using Aboriginal learning techniques, the educators can bring a uniquely Aboriginal perspective to their teaching. The jarjums’ natural curiosity is fostered and the educators involve them in outcome-focused thinking where they can take an active role in their learning.

"Our children
Are connected and culturally safe, immersed in programs that value and build on languages and practices shared by families.
Connections
Culture and community are key drivers for our program design: supported and influenced by community and Elders..
Needs are identified early
All our children receive health checks upon or before enrolment and work with speech and occupational therapists regularly, affording early assessment and intervention.
Our early childhood teachers
Are degree qualified, highly skilled and work alongside allied health professionals.
Early learning in natural environments
Is one of our strengths where children get to choose how, when and where they learn.
Collaboration
With families and kinship carers helps us to support them as children’s first teachers."

Programs

Programs
The program at Deadly Kindy focuses on culture and identity. For the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander jarjums and gundoos this means supporting their individuality, identity and sense of belonging. For the non-Indigenous children, they enhance their knowledge and understanding of Inigenous culture. The educators work closely with the elders and local communities around the centre. They engage authentically to pass on vital cultural knowledge and skills.
The jarjums also have a strong connection to country through the centre’s bush tukka gardens, outdoor play environments and environmental education. They learn about environmental responsibility, develop a sense of belonging and understand their role as custodians of country.

“I’ve been a part of the Early Childhood Education and Learning sector for over 20 years. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Teaching (Early Childhood) and also over 10 years working in management roles.
I absolutely love teaching young children. Being an active learner myself, I love making an impact on the children’s lives; instilling a love for education, culture, wellbeing and also lifelong learning. I believe the first five years of a child’s life are very important and can impact on the rest of their life. I love that each day is different and that I can help create a brighter future for these jarjums by giving them a great start to life and also education. It’s also important to us here at Deadly Kindy that we provide a cultural education for our jarjums. Each families’ culture is very important. Working for a Deadly Kindy is a great opportunity for me and also provides the jarjums with the environment and opportunity to learn more about their culture, connect with mob and build a stronger sense of belonging and identity. I am inspired by the people I work with daily, for different reasons. One of my favourite things about working for ATSICHS and Deadly Kindy is that it’s all about supporting community and inspiring others. I love surrounding myself with people that see the best in any situation and want to help and support others. When I am not teaching I enjoy spending time with my family, hiking, cooking and being outdoors in nature.”
