Centre philosophy

Centre philosophy

At Child’s Play ELC, our philosophy is simple: every child matters. We believe each child is unique, capable and deserving of care, respect and opportunities to thrive. Our centres are guided by values of inclusion, belonging, kindness and respect, creating a place where families feel supported and children feel at home.

As immigrants from the UK, our founders Sam and Ian Johnson came to see childcare as an extension of family. After many years working in education, they dreamed of creating their own centres where children are truly nurtured and families feel deeply connected. That vision lives on today, in welcoming spaces that feel like a second home and give every child the chance to grow into a confident, compassionate learner.

Health and Nutrition

Health and Nutrition

We know healthy food fuels happy learning. That’s why our in-house chefs prepare fresh, seasonal meals and snacks daily, designed to give children the nutrients they need to grow and thrive.

Our meals are as diverse as the little learners we serve, featuring a variety of cuisines, including Mexican, Italian, Indian, and classic Australian dishes. Plus, we’re flexible – adjusting our menu based on children’s needs and preferences, making mealtimes a truly delightful experience.

About the Curriculum

About the Curriculum

Our curriculum is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, which sees every child as curious, capable and full of potential. We focus on seven key areas of learning, including literacy, numeracy, creativity, wellbeing, social and emotional development. This balance helps children build confidence and skills for both school and life.

Learning happens through play, real-world experiences and meaningful connections with others. Our educators listen to children’s ideas and guide their learning in ways that reflect their interests and cultural background. This creates a program that feels fun and engaging while also supporting each child to grow into a confident and compassionate individual.

Kindergarten/Preschool Programs

Kindergarten/Preschool Programs

Our kindergarten program is led by qualified kindergarten teachers who guide children through a rich, play-based curriculum inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. With a strong focus on school readiness, we help children grow in confidence, independence and a love of learning.

Alongside literacy, numeracy and creativity, we celebrate the little milestones that make a big difference: putting on jackets, packing bags and caring for belongings. These everyday achievements, supported by our caring teachers, give children the skills and self-assurance they need to step into school with excitement and pride.

We’ve had a really good experience at Childs Play ELC in Torquay. The educators are lovely — super caring and genuinely great with the kids. The centre feels warm and welcoming, and communication with families is really good, which we appreciate. The space is well set up and there’s a good mix of play and learning. Our child has settled in so well and actually enjoys going, which gives us real peace of mind knowing they’re in good hands. Would definitely recommend to families looking for a friendly, supportive daycare. Ps.. if I could give it 6 STARS I would. 😀

My two children have attended from 5 months to 4 years of age. I feel that they get so much from the educators who have tackled potty training, big feelings and a new baby. My youngest loves the baby room, shes always excited to see Doreen, (and the beautiful room one team!) and goes to her so happily each morning. They have picked up when shes been out of sorts and are quick to let us know of any concerns or happy new things that my baby has achieved! She is thriving in a room of her peers and the photos I see on the app give me reassurance through my work day that shes having a great time. My eldest has been at the daycare since she was just over 18 months. She loves going to see her friends and she has learned so much in the last year progressing her drawing and writing skills whilst still being allowed to be little. I find the daily affirmations and ways in which the educators deal with any issues within the classroom are reflected in her imaginative play at home. Im always happy to see when she plays the 'teacher' she is kind and empathetic often saying things like "come on friends let's all sit on the mat together then I will read a lovely book" When we ask about her day she often is excited about incursions and classroom projects most recently sunflowers and compost jars. Reina and Bridget are particular favourites of our eldest who has benefited from their unwavering patience this year. I must also add the management team are incredible. (Loo, Megan and Laura- thank you) We have limited support from family and their unending support throughout some tricky stages has been phenomenal. We have cried at emotional drop off and pick ups and always had a kind word and a ear to listen when we need to voice our worries. We trialled a daycare closer to home but found it to not be a good fit. We were lucky enough to have the support of the team to get the girls back where they were happy and supported. We genuinely feel both our children are loved by the staff even when their behaviour can be hardwork the team take it in their stride. I would recommend childsplay torquay to any parent. Happy kids and a team you can rely on to look after your most precious people.

We have had the most wonderful educators across the centre from the baby room to the kindergarten room. All caring, compassionate and kind and the kids have loved them all.
