🎉 Integricare Northmead celebrated NAIDOC Week with a range of exciting activities! This special week expanded our learning about First Nations people and Australia's history, culture, and traditions. 👩‍🏫 We had an amazing visit from Miss Cynthia, an Aboriginal Kindy teacher, who introduced us to the traditional Aboriginal paint called "Ochre." Derived from grinding natural pigments and minerals found in underwater rocks, ochre was used to paint dots on the children's faces and on the artwork, which they absolutely loved! 📖 Aunty Cynthia also shared captivating stories and led arts and craft activities. One highlight was the exploration of a real emu egg that she had painted. The children compared it to a chicken egg and learned that male emus take care of the eggs and the chicks after they hatch. 🦘 Our kangaroo dress-up and tapping stick activity was a hit! The children enjoyed learning about Aboriginal people's love for nature and animals through this fun experience. 🎶 We also had the opportunity to learn Aboriginal language songs and counting numbers. The children eagerly picked up words like "Warrami" (hello), "Nallawah" (sit down), and "Mittagar" (friends). We even sang "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" in the Aboriginal language and practised counting to ten. The educators and children were inspired to create beautiful dot-marking artwork, exploring creativity and cultural connection! 🌏 Integricare North Strathfield, located in the beautiful Wangal country within the Canada Bay council area, has dedicated NAIDOC Week to deeply exploring the rich history, traditions, and connection to waterways of the Wangal people. 📚 The children engaged in immersive learning and research, discovering the significance of natural elements like sticks, shells, and rocks. They learned about how the Wangal people's connection to waterways shaped diet, which includes seafood caught using traditional fishing traps. 🎨 Further activities included creating artwork inspired by the Wangal people's deep bond with the country, sea, and land. The children also crafted sculptures inspired by Edward Clarke's 'Fish Traps' installation, part of the Inner West Council's 'Gadigal Wangal Wayfinding Project.' At Integricare Auburn, we're honouring the rich cultural heritage of campfires during NAIDOC Week! For thousands of years, campfires have been central to daily life, providing light, warmth, and a place to cook food. They are also much more – a communal space for sharing stories, songs, and spending time together. The children explored Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learning and stories revolving around the campfire, highlighting its significance in bringing people together and fostering community. 🌟 To build this learning, the children then created a campfire using logs, branches, cello paper as flames, and a tea light. The children loved cooperating to build this campfire. 🔥 Next, after bonding by the warm fire, the children were read the story "Warnayarra the Rainbow Snake."
