We are disappointed with how our experience concluded at Butterfly Child Care.
Over several months, our son experienced ongoing biting incidents. After requesting a meeting on multiple occasions, we eventually met with staff to discuss concerns, patterns, and possible strategies. During this meeting, we shared that his behaviours had significantly reduced when he was previously placed with an older peer group, but increased again following recent room and cohort changes.
We appreciated that some staff recognised these patterns and began implementing strategies such as improved observation, sensory supports, visual aids, and clearer communication. However, much of this felt delayed, and for an extended period we experienced inconsistent feedback, missing incident reports, and limited proactive engagement from management.
I acknowledge that I was frustrated at times, particularly when we felt we were not receiving appropriate support and were repeatedly pushed back when raising the same concerns. Early on, it was implied that the behaviour was occurring at home; however, our child does not have other children at home, and we did not observe these behaviours outside of the childcare environment. As the behaviour continued over several months, it became clear this was no longer an isolated or situational issue, but one that required consistent and proactive intervention within the service.
After sending a firm email to finally secure a meeting — as there had been little effort to initiate one or proactively develop strategies — we believed this discussion would lead to a collaborative plan moving forward. Instead, following that meeting, we were advised that our son’s place would be terminated. Given the time and effort spent trying to work constructively with the service, this outcome was both unexpected and upsetting.
While we were open about our dissatisfaction with how the situation was handled and how responsibility was initially directed toward us, the decision to end our son’s placement following these discussions was deeply disappointing.
We understand that early childhood settings face challenges and must prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all children. However, families also deserve timely intervention, respectful and consistent communication, and a genuine opportunity to work together before decisions of this nature are made.
