Halloween is here!

This spooky celebration seems to grow bigger each year, with increasing numbers of kids (and parents) dressing up and hitting the streets for a trick-or-treating adventure.

In Australia, we're well into the sunshine of Spring by October, but the dark and gloomy symbols of Halloween are increasingly popular with families. So, we thought some activities involving ghosts, witches, spiders and bats would be fun to get you into the spirit of Halloween!

Some crafts to try in your Early Childhood Education Centre

Felt ghosts

Download a toy gost template from Activity Villiage. Preschoolers will have so much fun making their own mini ghost in this simple sewing activity. Careful though, this one has googl-eyes involved so there is a choking hazard and age limits will apply!

Easy black bats

Basic cut and paste can do so much for a child and with these simple paper cut-outs, glue and googly-eyes, you're about to set a child's Halloween right! This collage is suitable for young children, supervised with small parts to celebrate Halloween.

Masking tape mummy

A quick and easy activity that is relatively mess free!

Spider fingers

A simple activity which uses scissors to encourage fine motor development.

Halloween full moon

Younger children might need help cutting out their bats but will enjoy gluing them on to their 'moon'.

Halloween moon mobiles

A more complicated version of the activity above which gives older kids the chance to turn their moon into a mobile.

Witch's hat

With very few materials, you can create a coven of witches and have a crazy hat parade with this quick and easy activity. Adapting this activity is easy with a little bit of creativity and some imagination.

Blob monsters

Less spooky, more cute, this colourful and fun idea will delight younger audiences who may not be all that excited about the horror of Halloween.

Pumpkin mosaic

Put a Halloween spin on the old cut and paste activities. Use Halloween themed colours to create a cute pumpkin collage. You don't have to stop at a Jack-o-lantern though, you might like to make a whole host of colourful Halloween haunts for your class.

Pumpkin plates

No pumpkin will be the same! Cover paper plates in different shades of orange and yellow to create a brightly coloured pumpkin - add a green stalk to the top and hang about the class to create your own pumpkin patch.

Jack-o-lantern

Advanced activity for an educator to take on in an instructional way. Here are the instructions on how to carve a pumpkin with the kids in your service and how to turn it into an educational and fun experience.

Happy Halloween!
