Skye Children's Co-operative is a community based not-for-profit service with all profits reinvested back into the centre for the benefit of the children and the community. We believe that families are an integral part of which shapes as a co-operative, but also as a shared child-centred, reflective, respectful practise with each of our staff members and the Board of Management. We aim to achieve, for each child, the foundation for a love of lifelong learning in a culturally rich, stimulating, kind, sustainable and playful environment built on respectful relationships. We value Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, specifically the Wurundjeri Wilam people as the custodians of the land we work and learn, as Australia's first people and committed to maintaining an environment that reflects these values of respect for the land, waterways, fauna and flora and people. 

Skye is a 42 place centre which runs three rooms based on children’s ages and stage of development.  Each of the three rooms is named after a native animal from our local Gresswell Reserve which is also the location of our Bush Kinder program.  The Sugar Gliders room is for our youngest children, The Swift Parrot for our toddlers/ pre-kinder children and the Eastern Grey Kangaroos room which includes our Kindergarten program. The Co-operative operates from 7:00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday.

At Skye Children's Co-operative we use Storypark, a private online space that ensures your child recieves the best support possible and that you are involved and up to date with your child's development.  Storypark provides each child with an online community, which their parent/guardian own and control who has access to. 

We go above and beyond the standard curriculum of childcare and kindergartens inclusive of programs: 

Bush Kinder

Bush Kinder is an approach to providing Early Education. Educators take children into a natural space to spend long and regular periods of time in unstructured play to discover, investigate and invent with open-ended materials and resources.

It has been well researched and documented the advantages of outside and nature play for children. We are very privileged to be located a short stoll from GresswellState Forest to take advantage of this bush playground and use it to deliver some of our program. This is a very exciting venture, and children get much enjoyment and learning from the experince. 

Eco-program

At Skye, we have a eco-program facitator who plans intentional sustanable learning programs for all age groups talorored to their developmental stage and their current interest.

Music and movement

The centre engages an independent, internationally recognised early childhood music and movement program for children from baby to toddlers, to preschoolers to kindergarteners. Our music program includes an artistically conceived flow of songs, nursery rhymes, instrumental jam sessions, fingerplays, and movement activities. The combination and types of activities are research-based and support children’s developing competence in tonality and rhythm. In addition, activities evolve from the child’s world and include vocal play, animal sounds, rhythm play, language play, and a good bit of genuine, silly fun!

Meals

Menus are created seasonally which meets our values at Skye, a healthy, multicultural menu that includes our families and children’s input. We are guided by the Australian Dietary Guide Australian, Guide to Healthy eating and the Australian Government’s Get up & grow: healthy eating and physical activity for early childhood and NQS 2: Children’s Health and Safety. We provide for all dietary preferences, wither they be due to allergy, intolerance, religious, cultural or ethics.

Philosophy Statement

Our place: Skye Children’s Cooperative (Skye) was built on the homeland of the Wurundjeri Wilam people who belonged to the Woiworung language group and greater Kulin Nation.  Skye Children’s Cooperative was opened on the 20th February in 1988 and has always operated as a community not-for-profit co-operative with all profits reinvested back into the centre for the benefit of the children and the community. The building is owned by Banyule City Council and for over 30 years the partnership between council and the independent management of the Skye Children’s Cooperative Board has fostered strong links between Banyule City Council and the community, embedding Skye’s place as an education and care centre of choice in the local community.

Our vision: To be fearlessly curious in the pursuit of achieving, for each child, the foundation for a love of lifelong learning in a culturally rich, stimulating, kind, sustainable and playful environment built on respectful relationships.

Our beliefs:

  • Families and children are at the core of our centre. Families are an integral part of what shapes our centre as a co-operative and are partners in a shared child-centered, reflective, respectful practice with each of our staff members and the Board of Management.
  • Relationships with parents, the local and wider community is supported and nurtured by open communication.
  • Each child has agency; that is, they have capacities and a right to initiate and lead their own learning, development and well-being to actively participate as decision-makers in matters affecting them and their community.
  • Each child’s learning, development and well-being is dynamic, complex, holistic and significant.
  • Each child has a right to be a successful, competent and capable learner. It is the collaborative work of each staff member and each child’s family, to create a healthy learning environment to foster this.
  • Each child learning with and through their environment, seamlessly as their 'classrooms’, the constructed and the natural environment is entwined.
  • Each child, their family and each of our staff members are significant in their own right.

Our goals and aspirations:

  • To become the premier provider of education and care within the City of Banyule.
  • To have high expectations for each child, their family, each staff member, Board members and other early years professionals and organisations in the local and wider community.
  • To provide ongoing professional learning and development, through critical reflective practice and accountability to ensure that each staff member is knowledgeable, skilled
  • To create a learning and well-being culture that is mindful of the individual and collective responsibilities, celebrating our successes.

Our intentions for action:

Hold high expectations and with dedicated, experienced early childhood professionals, continue to provide an educational program with a central focus on learning through play and discovery for each child to guide our practice.  This will be based the on critical reflection and be guided by:

  • A range of early childhood theories
  • National Quality Framework
  • Victorian Early Years Learning and Development framework.

Skye Children's Co-operative is an EXCELLENT child care centre. The staff are wonderful, caring, friendly and approachable. I've had my 3 year old enrolled there since 2009 and both she and I have been very happy with the care.
Skye Children's Co-operative is a lovely Childcare Centre. It has really warm and friendly staff plus a wonderful environment for the children and the outdoor area is amazing. It’s a nice community run (not for profit) centre as well, so the focus is on the children and not making a profit! I highly recommend this Centre.
