About the Curriculum
About the Curriculum
“Let the child be the scriptwriter, director and the actor in their own play” - Magda Gerber
Nursery Space: 6 weeks – 2 years
Learning starts from before birth, and our Educators have created a welcoming and nurturing nursery environment where each baby feels safe to explore and discover new things - through their senses, their communication and cues (body language, facial expression and sounds) and through experimentation. On any given day you can see the nursery children engaging in all types of play including sensory play, music time, story time and more. Every day provides a brand new, exciting adventure for our babies to support their development, learning and wellbeing.
Toddler Space: 2 - 3 years
Our teachers and educators encourage the children to learn through play to help enhance their sensory-motor development. This happens through carefully planned music, dance, games, role playing and reading experiences.
On any given day the Toddlers can be seen developing their numeracy by building a tower, sorting objects, pointing and identifying shapes and patterns and participating in counting songs and games.
Children in our toddler space are encouraged to participate in group play. Group play is important as it helps our toddlers develop important social skills such as, turn-taking, developing self-confidence and emotional self-regulation. Our skilled team helps children through talking, planning and role modelling.
Preschool Space: 3 – 6 years
Preschool is a unique time for learning with peers and developing skills for later learning including confidence and curiosity, important skills for starting school. Our play-based program has school readiness at its core, encouraging active engagement in learning and supporting a range of positive developmental outcomes including resilience, independence, critical thinking and creativity.
The oral language supports literacy learning and a child’s oral language ability is the best predictor for later success in learning to read and write. Hearing the sounds within a language is the first critical step for all literacy learning. Our team supports our Preschool children's literacy development by engaging in rich discussions, reading, storytelling, dramatic play and experimentation all of which introduce new vocabulary as part of everyday conversations.
Throughout the Preschool year, children use their language to share ideas, ask questions, express themselves, and connect with peers and adults in social settings.
Social-emotional skills, including the ability to self-regulate emotions, are supported through group learning experiences. Our team supports each child’s social and emotional development by labelling and talking about emotions and supporting appropriate responses as together, they engage in new and challenging situations. Our goal in the Preschool year is to prepare children and families for a smooth transition to primary school.
Morning
Mary is 11 months old and enjoys sensory play outside in the sandpit with her friends. She sits near her educator who helps teach her how to scoop the sand into the bucket. Mary is learning how to dig, carry, and move the sand. She is also exploring texture and learning what happens to the sand when she adds water!
Lunch
Mary has finished her lunch and is preparing to take a nap. Her educator changes her nappy, prepares a bottle and reads Mary a story before her afternoon sleep.
Afternoon
Mary and some of her nursery friends enjoy some story time and songs outside in the shaded garden. They read ‘Peepo’ which is Mary’s favourite book.
Morning
Damo is two and a half years old and loves to start his day at the centre outside on the climbing equipment. His friends join him, and together they pretend to be pirates on a ship looking for treasure. Through this exciting dramatic play, Damo is learning about himself and the world around him. Dramatic play is helping Damo identify his interests, abilities, likes and dislikes.
Lunch
Damo is watering the vegetables in the garden. By doing this, Damo is learning the importance of growing and caring for the veggies in the garden. Damo picks a tomato from the garden, which the Chef will use to help make Damo and his friend’s lunch - Spaghetti Bolognese!
Afternoon
Damo enjoys art, and today he is painting a beach scene from a recent family holiday. He adds the finishing touches and sets the painting aside to dry; so that he can take it home to share with his family.
Morning
Jo is almost five years old and can’t wait for today’s carpentry experience - she loves building things! Carpentry experiences allow Jo and her friends to extend their learning through real-life experiences. While participating in carpentry, Jo is learning to problem solve, experiment and predict. She is also improving her hand eye coordination, manipulative skills and muscular strength.
Lunch
Before Jo sits down for lunch with her friends and educators, Jo takes part in the centre’s sports program. Jo loves sports. Sports helps Jo improve her flexibility and strength (perfect for growing bodies!). Sports also allows her to practice different skills in a fun and engaging way.
Afternoon
Jo is off to ‘big school’ next year and she can't wait to start! Jo and her friends will be visiting the local primary school next week. In preparation for the visit, the class is creating a list of questions to ask the Principal and school children.
Health and Nutrition
Health and Nutrition
Our centre chef prepares and cooks nutritious meals daily, catering to the unique dietary requirements of every child. We believe that by encouraging active participation (such as growing their own fruit and vegetables, preparing, and finally cooking!) children learn to appreciate and understand the importance of healthy eating across a wide variety of food.
Our centre offers seasonal whole food-based menus – created to delight the fussiest eaters.

Hi my name is Gessika and I am the Centre Manager at First Grammar Fairfield. I began my career in early learning in 2009 and started at First Grammar Fairfield in 2011 having completed a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood.
I chose this career as it gives me the ability to shape our next generation considering that today’s children are tomorrow’s future. I love knowing that every time I come to work, I make a difference in children’s lives, especially when I get to see them develop and flourish under our care.
Throughout my years working in early childhood, I’ve learned that children learn through play and if they are provided with an environment that is challenging, stimulating and aesthetically pleasing, they will become confident and capable explorers. Children develop best when they are given the opportunity to engage in a wide range of different activities planned by field experts and for their particular age group. Therefore, my teaching style focuses on the holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs, which builds a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and good wellbeing.
Having your child attend our centre is very important in preparing them for the transition to kindergarten as it involves developing far more important skills than writing names and recognising numbers. The children will learn to become independent, to socialise and easily build friendships as well as building their resilience.
At we are committed to ensuring the health, safety and welfare of all children, team members, families and visitors. We have zero tolerance for child abuse and are committed to providing children with a child safe environment where they feel safe and supported.
We are committed to giving our families and children the best experience while they are attending our service. Therefore, we are well aware that this cannot happen unless we have a positive work culture that is focused on quality. We have a multicultural team and many of us have worked at for over 10 years. We are a compassionate team who believe that our smallest act of kindness can put the largest smile on a face. We constantly strive for success here and reflect on our practices daily to highlight where and how we can improve both professionally and personally.
We are all passionate about early childhood education, have an infectious and positive attitude and are excited every day to be a part of our unique calling. We believe that there are endless opportunities when working in early childhood because children see the world in a simpler way and sometimes it’s the simple path that leads to innovation.
We acknowledge that the family is the most powerful influence on each child’s life and that children benefit the most when we work in partnerships with families. This is why our engagement with families start during the enrolment process where families get the opportunity to share with us their expectations, suggestions, information about their children and home lifestyles.
We have a coffee machine for parents in the foyer to enjoy upon drop off and pick up as well as some snacks. We also hold regular celebrations and family events so we can all socialise and get to know each other beyond what the swift daily drop-off and pick ups allow.
I look forward to meeting you and your family soon!

We have been part of First Grammar Fairfield for several years, and our overall experience has been very positive. Our eldest son began attending when he was nearly two years old, and our youngest daughter has been enrolled since around nine months of age. From the very beginning, our son transitioned seamlessly, which speaks to how welcoming and supportive the environment is. At his graduation, it was clear to us how much he had grown in confidence and independence. He began kindergarten this year as a happy and self-assured five-year-old, and we have no doubt that his time at First Grammar contributed significantly to that. Whenever we speak with him about his time there, he remembers all of his educators fondly and still recalls their names to this day. We are truly grateful to all of the educators who have supported him so wonderfully through every stage of his development. Currently, our daughter attends this daycare, and our experience with the babies’ room has been exceptional. Despite her young age and limited days, she has already developed a strong bond with the team there. She has grown particularly attached to Miss Kathy, which is a testament to how caring and nurturing the entire babies’ room staff is. We would also like to acknowledge Miss Patricia, Miss Fadia, and Miss Marlin for their dedication and attentiveness. We’re always pleasantly surprised by how beautifully Miss Marlin does her hair—it’s such a lovely personal touch that our family really appreciates. It gives us great peace of mind to know that while we are at work, the team ensures our daughter is happy, well-fed, and engaged, even sharing photos of her smiling throughout the day. Miss Gess, the centre manager, has also been consistently responsive, approachable, and committed to addressing any concerns promptly. She is always very involved and creating personal relationships which truly makes a difference. When my son was attending, he would always look for her at every drop-off and it certainly shows us, how valued she is to him. We deeply appreciate her efforts in organising engaging activities and incursions that enrich the children’s experience. Most importantly, when we pick up our children, they are always content and happy—something truly invaluable to us as parents. Read more
