About the Curriculum
About the Curriculum
“Let the child be the scriptwriter, director and the actor in their own play” - Magda Gerber
Nursery Space: 6 weeks – 2 years
Learning starts from before birth, and our Educators have created a welcoming and nurturing nursery environment where each baby feels safe to explore and discover new things - through their senses, their communication and cues (body language, facial expression and sounds) and through experimentation. On any given day you can see the nursery children engaging in all types of play including sensory play, music time, story time and more. Every day provides a brand new, exciting adventure for our babies to support their development, learning and wellbeing.
Toddler Space: 2 - 3 years
Our teachers and educators encourage the children to learn through play to help enhance their sensory-motor development. This happens through carefully planned music, dance, games, role playing and reading experiences.
On any given day the Toddlers can be seen developing their numeracy by building a tower, sorting objects, pointing and identifying shapes and patterns and participating in counting songs and games.
Children in our toddler space are encouraged to participate in group play. Group play is important as it helps our toddlers develop important social skills such as, turn-taking, developing self-confidence and emotional self-regulation. Our skilled team helps children through talking, planning and role modelling.
Kindergarten Space: 3 – 6 years
Kindergarten is a unique time for learning with peers and developing skills for later learning including confidence and curiosity, important skills for starting school. Our play-based program has school readiness at its core, encouraging active engagement in learning and supporting a range of positive developmental outcomes including resilience, independence, critical thinking and creativity.
The oral language supports literacy learning and a child’s oral language ability is the best predictor for later success in learning to read and write. Hearing the sounds within a language is the first critical step for all literacy learning. Our team supports our Kindergarten children's literacy development by engaging in rich discussions, reading, storytelling, dramatic play and experimentation all of which introduce new vocabulary as part of everyday conversations.
Throughout the Kindergarten year, children use their language to share ideas, ask questions, express themselves, and connect with peers and adults in social settings.
Social-emotional skills, including the ability to self-regulate emotions, are supported through group learning experiences. Our team supports each child’s social and emotional development by labelling and talking about emotions and supporting appropriate responses as together, they engage in new and challenging situations. Our goal in the kindergarten year is to prepare children and families for a smooth transition to primary school.
Morning
Sarah is 11 months old and enjoys sensory play outside in the sandpit with her friends. She sits near her educator who helps teach her how to scoop the sand into the bucket. Sarah is learning how to dig, carry, and move the sand. She is also exploring texture and learning what happens to the sand when she adds water!
Lunch
Sarah has finished her lunch and is preparing to take a nap. Her educator changes her nappy, prepares a bottle and reads Sarah a story before her afternoon sleep.
Afternoon
Sarah and some of her nursery friends enjoy some story time and songs outside in the shaded garden. They read ‘Peepo’ which is Sarah’s favourite book.
Morning
John is two and a half years old and loves to start his day at the centre outside on the climbing equipment. His friends join him, and together they pretend to be pirates on a ship looking for treasure. Through this exciting dramatic play, John is learning about himself and the world around him. Dramatic play is helping John identify his interests, abilities, likes and dislikes.
Lunch
John is watering the vegetables in the garden. By doing this, John is learning the importance of growing and caring for the veggies in the garden. John picks a tomato from the garden, which the Chef will use to help make John and his friend’s lunch - Spaghetti Bolognese!
Afternoon
John enjoys art, and today he is painting a beach scene from a recent family holiday. He adds the finishing touches and sets the painting aside to dry; so that he can take it home to share with his family.
While painting, John is learning how to express himself creatively and how to convey his ideas and emotions. Painting is also helping develop John’s hand eye coordination, finger, wrist and hand strength. Making marks on paper is important for self expression as well as later learning.
Morning
Camilla is almost five years old and can’t wait for today’s carpentry experience - she loves building things! Carpentry experiences allow Camilla and her friends to extend their learning through real-life experiences. While participating in carpentry, Camilla is learning to problem solve, experiment and predict. She is also improving her hand eye coordination, manipulative skills and muscular strength.
Lunch
Before Camilla sits down for lunch with her friends and educators, Camilla takes part in the centre’s sports program. Camilla loves sports. Sports helps Camilla improve her flexibility and strength (perfect for growing bodies!). Sports also allows her to practice different skills in a fun and engaging way.
Afternoon
Camilla is off to ‘big school’ next year and she can't wait to start! Camilla and her friends will be visiting the local primary school next week. In preparation for the visit, the class is creating a list of questions to ask the Principal and school children.
Health and Nutrition
Health and Nutrition
Our centre chef prepares and cooks nutritious meals daily, catering to the unique dietary requirements of every child. We believe that by encouraging active participation (such as growing their own fruit and vegetables, preparing, and finally cooking!) children learn to appreciate and understand the importance of healthy eating across a wide variety of food.
Our centre offers seasonal whole food-based menus – created to delight the fussiest eaters.

I love working with my wonderful team here in Berwick, watching them build relationships with each child, and seeing the educational care they provide.
I have worked in the early childhood education sector for over 10 years. The majority of my work as an educator involved running a nursery and looking after babies. I absolutely love all-ages groups and understand that it’s not easy for new parents to return to work and have their babies in childcare. This is where my passion for collaborative relationships with families became very important to me. This encouraged me to shift my career goals more towards management and to provide the highest-quality education and care for all children. I love working with my wonderful team here in Berwick, watching them build relationships with each child, and seeing the educational care they provide.
Please feel free to get in touch with our Family Support Team and arrange a tour of our service at any time. We look forward to welcoming you to Headstart Berwick early education centre.

My son absolutely adores her. She genuinely pays attention to every child, and even after a long day, she still greets us with the biggest smile and shares all the little highlights of his day. Horrible place, please please please avoid this place, there are some educators who are so racist, Do not send your child there , unless you are “white” then they care about you otherwise your child would be absolutely neglected , this review particularly is for an Educator called “Heather” not the manager , this heather who I don’t know her last name was OMG , she was not even wants to show us the baby room when we had orientation day , she pointed the room and said this is the room and we went around to see the sleeping area , she didn’t want answer our Questions and reluctant to talk to us, OMG was absolutely discussing behaviour, obviously we didn’t enrol , but one of my friend did and she witnessed that the same lady refused to give a child her water , completely ignoring the child while chitchatting with another lady , this childcare are full of educators who care about white kids if you are not please please please avoid it, I have heard horrible things about this place , also the educators have their own kids in this centre as well which it makes them to discriminate between kids , I know some one said one educater was asking her kids nappy to be changed more frequently, but why your child need to be treated differently , and some white kids get special treatment by sitting next to the educators food spooning while another the bowl thrown at them , horrible stories that happened in this place , just avoid this place please if you care about your child , ❤️ Read more

Whether I’m dropping off or picking up, the attention that gets shown to my boys has always been incredible. With those rough/hard mornings or early starts I have seen them care for our kids as if they are their own and always keeping me in the loop! My boys are talking about their educators on the way home and always reporting having happy days! For this tired Mumma the team definitely put our minds at rest knowing they safe and having fun! How do you rate a childcare where 2 back to back incidents happened to your kid, the 2nd one being as severe as the child getting a fracture in his leg and none of the 4 educators in the room had any clue regarding how it happened. So this incident happened on 17th of July, when we got a call that our son is in distress. We asked if anything happened but they just told they are not sure exactly, and gave us an impression like he might be missing his parents. We reached there in less than 30 mins and only after that they told something has happened to his leg and he is not standing. They didn't even care to call us immediately when they noticed that. The incident report is the proof that nothing was administered to him. Our son was crying desperately when we reached there and we noticed the office admin was just sitting beside him holding his water bottle. All his regular educators were busy and no one was with him. We immediately realized something is wrong with him as when we tried to make him stand, he was just not putting his right leg down. Till date the question bugs us like how the 4 educators, the admin who was a floater educator did not realize the severity of the incident. We strongly doubt their knowledge of providing first aid or handling little kids who are unable to speak. Kindly note, this incident happened in the Joey classroom (which is not that huge) under the supervision of 4 educators who later told us they have not noticed anything happening. There were just 13 kids in the classroom at that time, and if all educators say that no one has noticed anything, that only concludes how good they are with their job. We took him to the emergency immediately, to discover that he has got a fracture in his right leg. It was a proper fracture and not a hairline one. The centre had not provided us with any incident report on that day of incident, so we went to collect it the next day. We wanted to understand what had happened exactly, but no one gave us any proper information. They just told our son was sitting at 1 place (which was not even a corner of the room or was hiding anywhere) and he suddenly started crying. It just broke our heart the way they were uncooperative with us. Talking about the frequencies of incidents, our son was bitten by another kid just 5 days back (July 12). It was winters, and he was wearing a sweater. The bite was good enough to tear his skin and for blood to come out. Again, think about the alertness of the educators. They were not even fast enough to stop the kids when such things happen. I would have rated them 0, just for the way they have made this a business rather than making it a place for care and compassion. We drop our kids thinking our child is safe with them and will have a good time. But they ensure that they give us more stress. There is no camera in the daycare, educators are not cooperative, centre manager leaves early, so there is lack of leadership. Imagine the admin lady who had just joined two months back before this incident, was taking care of our child and was also the acting centre manager at that point of time. We had noticed when we go to pick our kid, the educators are always near to each other chit chatting among themselves, rather than being scattered and keeping an eye on the kids. They serve afternoon snacks around 2.30-2.45 and after that nothing is served to the kids till the parent picks them up. Many parents had complained about the same and their reply is that we the parents should encourage our kids to ask for food. Kids are too small to ask for food by themselves, the centre should be pre-emptive to offer something as simple as food to them in regular intervals. I would ask the parents to think twice before sending kids here. Imagine the situation, how would you feel if something like this happened to your kid and for lifelong you won't even know how that happened. Read more

Educators will show they are sweet and caring and then once your kid settles, they stop. Our child suffered immensely. Multiple accidents and no one cared and when we questioned the educators, all we got was we can’t do anything. If you do random checks, you will find the educators lazying around and chitchatting instead of focusing on the kids. The worst scenario was our child broke a bone in the class and all we got was they don’t know how it happened. Nobody cared to even call an ambulance. Please stay away from Headstart because all you will get is lies. You will never know the truth because they don’t have cameras and they will get away because no one has any proof. Read more

There are so many wonderful things I can mention about Headstart EL Berwick. My son has been attending since he was 7mo, he's now 15mths and absolutely thriving. Every single educator has a special and unique relationship with my son; every time I drop him off I have absolute confidence he will have the best day. There is such a strong and genuine interest in adhering to my son's dietary requirements and stimulating his intense personality. The centre goes above and beyond to include special activities and programs (and also has a fruit bowl at reception promoting healthy eating), and makes a consistent effort to communicate clearly with the parents. On top of this, the centre is always kept clean and tidy. I could not be more thrilled to send my child to such an incredible day care.
