Educator in the spotlight: Ebony Rayner

Every month we profile an outstanding Australian early childhood educator, as a way of showcasing the amazing work happening in our sector and to provide inspiration and motivation. This week we are proud to introduce you to Ebony Rayner from Willow Early Learning Centre in Mudgeeraba, Queensland. 

What is your professional background and career experience?

My name is Ebony and I’ve been working in Early Childhood Education for the last four years. I began my journey into education while studying my Certificate III in Early Childhood Education as I finished high school. During my studies I was lucky enough to complete my placement with the team at Willow Early Learning Centre in which I was given an amazing experience to learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment. It was this experience which had me hooked, I simply couldn’t part with the experience and the children.

What attracted you to a career in early childhood sector?

While continuing my placement, I realised that I truly want to help others learn and grow. When I was offered a permanent position with centre manager Susan and the team, I realised that I had the opportunity to pursue a career which I loved – to start each day in a position which I felt passionate about and spend plenty of time with some amazing little humans.

What does a ‘normal day’ look like for you?

There’s almost no such thing as a ‘normal day’ in my life, however, I could tell you that my favourite part of every day is when I enter the yard and have all these beautiful little children running towards me for a hug.

What makes your room and environment unique?

I want children, parents and educators to come into my room feeling loved and excited for what’s to come. I believe I have a lot of energy and passion for the world around me, I try to incorporate that same passion into my room specifically and share it with these people.

What are some advantages of working in the early childhood sector?

There are almost too many advantages to list. You’re offered so much additional training and given opportunities to develop as a professional and as a person too. In early childhood, I believe that you get what you give and when I give the children my love and support – they give it back to me. We grow together.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face?

One of the biggest challenges I face is doubting myself. I’m not always confident in my own abilities and decisions, however, I’m working on enforcing my self-confidence every day.

How have you adapted to change these challenges?

There are always parts of the day in which I doubt myself, but I’m constantly surrounded by passionate educators who are there to support me and I’m there to support them too. I believe that together, we’re stronger. When facing the toughest challenges or facing battles I don’t think I can win, I try my best to think positively and just keep trying.

What advice would you give to someone think about a career or looking for a promotion in the early childhood education and care?

My advice to anyone looking to advance in or join the Early Childhood Education would be to believe in yourself. Enjoy every element that children have to offer and always remember that you have the opportunity to create and shape the next generation.

Hard work is an ethic which my parents taught me and is something I truly believe in, you get what you give.
