Cannot begin to express the gravity in which this centre did a disservice to my child. As a neurodivergent child she was discriminated against due to her disability, and unfortunately in the end was dismissed via an email that was sent to us at 7pm on a Friday evening, with no prior communication or effort made to inform us that as a centre they were no longer equipped to care for my child. Our dismissal should be a red flag to all families, but if your child is not neurotypical I strongly recommend you avoid Guppy’s Chermside West. There will be zero communication, no matter how much you try to advocate on behalf of your child. This is scary when your child can’t communicate, and you have to put your trust in staff who from our experience do not have to skills or knowledge to create a safe space. Multiple staff, including senior management used inappropriate language verbally and in written text (Educator in role of Centre Support and in Kindy support role during our time at the centre) had incredibly poor understanding and use of language in regards to my child. Older lead kindy educator (during our time) was also found to be using incorrect and demeaning terminology. Staff turnover in the kindy room was not communicated to parents when changes were implemented, and often staff present were unfamiliar to myself as a parent and my child. Reason for dismissal was behaviour related, however, Guppy’s did nothing to work with us as parents to help our child who displays these behaviours due to her disability, being a neurodivergent child and lacking speech skills. Centre pushed for my child to move into a room and space that could not provide her an environment to thrive in. Instead it caused her incredible distress, with a teacher who should not be working with vulnerable children who cannot advocate or speak up for themselves - due to the lack of knowledge and appropriate education on that teachers behalf when it comes to educating and nurturing children with disabilities. Although Guppy’s was aware of my child’s ‘diagnosis’ they were not willing and or equipped to care for her appropriately. Instead of honestly communicating to us that they were unable to care for a neurodiverse child they instead chose to demonise my child, and in the end terminated service in the most unprofessional manner. Guppy’s website reads - “At Guppy’s we recognise all children as individuals regardless of their cultural background, disability, gender, beliefs and attitudes. All children are to be treated equally without bias or judgement. Individual efforts and skills are encouraged, recognised and appreciated and this is reflected through the service programs. No children are excluded on ground of gender, disability or behaviour” Unfortunately this statement was false in regards to my daughter as she was in fact excluded based on her disability and behaviour. The only written communication we received from Guppy’s which informed us of her dismissal states this. In all of this there was a single teacher who went above an beyond for my child who I am incredibly thankful for - however this teacher no longer works at the centre. Please think very carefully before choosing Guppy’s Chermside for your child. Read more

At the start these guys were good providers of care and were easy to communicate with although gave us moments of questioning then I became a single parent, they became dismissive and their word couldn’t be trusted. In the end they poorly dismissed my 3 year old son by emailing at 7pm on a Friday night stating he was no longer welcome due to being a health and safety risk to the centre from general 3 year behaviour. At the same time, the behaviours he was showing and doing, were happening to him also. Further to this email there was no phone call, no meeting, no further contact from senior management. I believe they were more so apart of the problem than trying to be apart of the solution as they continually put my 3 year old into the bigger kids rooms, when mentally and physically they are not the same, creating a viscous cycle of bullying!
