Unique ways to make Mother's Day special
Happy Mother's Day this week to all the wonderful mums out there.

With mums often being the organisers of the house, Mother's Day celebrations tend to lose their shine when you end up planning your own super-secret surprise.

So, for all those mums out there who always end up organising their own Mother's Day, here are a few ideas to ensure you still have a special day, even if you have to plan it all yourself.

Create your own exotic vacation

Unfortunately, we don't mean skip off to Europe for the weekend! But you can recreate an adventure from your favourite destination in your own front room! Grab some croissants and cheese and enjoy a French-themed breakfast, or order some food from your favourite deli and head out for a Mediterranean picnic.

If you are feeling creative, you can recreate a real vacation scene, teaching your children a few basic French words, or dressing up with a beret and decorating with a checkered tablecloth.

Plant some flowers

Rather than someone buy you a bunch of flowers, why not plant some flower seeds with your children? You don't need a lot of space or a large garden bed, a planter on a deck will do. You can get very creative and plant them in the shape of a heart or a name. Simply have your kids draw a picture in the soil with a stick and lay the seeds along the grooves.

Buy seeds that will grow well in your conditions and local climate, and if you want quick results, choose the fast-growing variety. That way you will have Mother's Day flowers that keep on growing!

Start a yearly tradition

Find something that you do together as a mother and child each year; something you can look back on in years to come. One idea is to get a large piece of paper and do hand and footprints in colourful finger-paint each year. Kids can write a message next to their own prints (or scribble if they are too young!). The prints will be something you will all cherish for years to come.

Make a memory book

If you have crafty kids, a lovely thing to do together is to make a memory book. Kids love to sort through old photos and they can decorate a blank photo album with drawings, stickers, messages and photos. Each family member could have their own page to do, or you could work on it as a family. At the end you'll have a lovely keepsake that you have all made together.

Do something un-mummy

Don't feel like organising something for yourself? Sometimes the biggest gift you can give yourself is time. Hire yourself a babysitter and head out for an afternoon. Whether it's seeing a movie by yourself, relaxing with a pedicure, or going for a walk on the beach, Mother's Day is the perfect opportunity to give yourself a break and treat yourself!

Be proud

Above all else, stop and be proud of the job you do! Even if the kids are too young to understand the significance, take a moment on Mother's Day to pat yourself on the back for the amazing job you do every day.
