This month, on Sunday 15th May, the world celebrates
International Day of Families. The special day is an annual memorial day established by the UN to raise awareness of issues relating to families and to promote positive change.
Every family is different, and the International Day of Families exists to celebrate this this and to highlight the importance of maintaining healthy and happy relationships with your relatives.
Since its establishment, International Day of Families has inspired a series of awareness-raising events, promoting gender equality and rights of children within families, as well as local community-based projects and family outings.
Activities include workshops, conferences, television programmes and cultural events highlighting the yearly theme.
Our lives can get so hectic, so International Day of Families is the perfect opportunity to slow down and spend quality time with our kids. Head out for a picnic, head to the beach, go for a bushwalk, or do something that bonds you as a family unit.
For those without extended family nearby, a play in the park with other local kids can serve to connect with the local community and find family in friendships.
In today's society families come in all shapes and sizes, as well as being split across countries and continents. So International Day of Families is the perfect day to remind us to make that phone call, send an email, or reconnect with relatives, wherever they may be.
It is also an opportunity to celebrate the uniqueness that is your family. Children form their values based on the family unit they are raised in. Each family is different, but the basis of unconditional love and support never changes. As the saying goes, "Family: where life begins and love never ends."
