50 Essential toddler activities
The toddler years can be a whirlwind of tantrums, laughter, frustration and joy. These are very busy years and though you might not see the end in sight, they go by very fast. So when you are feeling exhausted and drowning in sippy cups, here is a list of great toddler activities to enjoy together before they, all too quickly, grow up.

Indoor play

  1. Build a tower and knock it down
  2. Have a spur of the moment dance party
  3. Bake muffins
  4. Draw on the footpath with chalk
  5. Build a fort out of couch cushions
  6. Play balloon tennis, with a balloon and badminton racquets
  7. Play hide and seek
  8. Play indoor basketball, with a laundry basket and rolled up newspaper
  9. Make a foil crown and play at being princes or princesses
  10. Make a cardboard box car and go for a drive
  11. Have a treasure hunt
  12. Make a table tent
  13. Decorate cookies or cupcakes

Outdoor play

  1. Decorate cookies or cupcakes
  2. Run and jump in puddles
  3. Explore in the rain
  4. Plant a flower and watch it grow
  5. Roll down a hill
  6. Lie on a picnic rug and watch the birds and the clouds
  7. Stay up late and check out the stars
  8. Collect sticks and twigs and make a picture
  9. Make a fairy garden
  10. Try geocaching
  11. Skim rocks on a lake
  12. Make water footprints on the pavement or driveway
  13. Start an exploration journal together, going exploring and recording everything you find
  14. Find some rocks and paint them different patterns
  15. Build a cubbyhouse or fort
  16. Track the phases of the moon

Sensory play

  1. Make mud pies
  2. Build a sandcastle
  3. Squeeze and throw wet sponges
  4. Cook some spaghetti and add food colouring to make slimy coloured worms
  5. Jump on bubble wrap
  6. Walk barefoot on the grass
  7. Run through sprinklers together
  8. Scrunch up tissue paper and glue it to cardboard to make patterns
  9. Make your own rock pool at home
  10. Go on an outdoor ‘sound’ hunt
  11. Make scented playdough
  12. Dip your feet in the running water of a stream

  2. Reading time at the local library
  3. A children’s museum
  4. A botanical garden
  5. A fountain
  6. A local sporting match
