Seasonal gift ideas for carers
A loved and trusted child carer can sometimes feel like part of the family. These dedicated people share many of the major milestones which mark a child's progression through life in the precious first five years: learning to walk, toilet training, learning to write their name and sometimes even losing a first tooth.

Carers also help children deal with the little knock backs in life, they are there to patch a stubbed toe, soothe when a favoured toy is being played with by another kid and proffer a well needed cuddle when mum heads off to work in the morning.

Many children form a very close bond with their carers and for many parents leaving their children safe in the hands of such warm, nurturing and talented staff makes it possible for them to be successful in other aspects of their life such as work or study.

Is it possible to adequately thank the people who care for our children? It seems as if they give so much and receive so little in return! At this time of the year, many families give their carers gifts to say thanks for everything and instead of the same old chocolates and wine (although I am sure most carers would love these!) we thought we'd offer some alternative gift ideas you might like to consider.

Remember gifts can be expensive but they don't need to be! Something heartfelt with a beautiful card attached will be appreciated no matter what it is. Our list below covers a few options which will hopefully get your inspiration flowing.
  1. Home made ginger snap cookies: cut into stars and Christmas trees and beautifully wrapped. These delicious treats give you a great excuse to do some baking with your children.
  2. Seedlings in pots: Purchase a couple of trays of seedlings, possibly herbs or flowers, from your local garden shop and transfer the seedlings into decorative pots with Christmas ribbon. The gift that keeps on giving!
  3. Reusable coffee cups: Depending on how many carers there are in your service, environmentally friendly reusable coffee cups such as the Keep Cup are a fantastic way to store the morning brew!
  4. Movie tickets: Everyone loves a trip to the movies and if you buy a book of 10 you will pay less per ticket.
  5. Mangoes: Nothing says Christmas in Australia like mangos, buy a huge box wrap it beautifully and take it in for the carers to divide up amongst themselves.
  6. A box of beautiful tea: With so many decadent types of tea around nowadays we are spoilt for choice and these beautiful boxes make wonderful gifts.
  7. A special piece of jewellery: if you have a bit more money to spend or want to get something for a special carer a piece like this would be amazing.
  8. A little piece of luxury: Although it may not seem very original, consumable and decadent treats such as rich scented candles, creamy bath bubbles and silky lip gloss are a great way to spoil someone.
  9. More is more: if money is no option or if you can pool your contributions with other families in the service you could give your carers an experience voucher such as the ones offered by Red Balloon.
  10. A magazine subscription: Chances are you know your carer pretty well by now, is there a bride to be? A gym nut or someone who loves cooking? Magazine subscriptions are a fantastic way to say thank you and whenever the latest issue hits your carer's mailbox they will be reminded of you!
