Food revolution day - get kids cooking

Over the last few years, shows like Masterchef, Junior Masterchef and Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution have done a huge amount to inspire kids' interest in cooking and May 15 is officially, according to Jamie Oliver anyway, global Food Revolution Day.

This is an annual campaign designed to highlight the importance of educating children and the people who feed them, whether that's parents, grandparents, school canteen staff or child care workers on the importance of healthy eating.

We love anything that Jamie does, because it is done with heart and it's an incredibly important campaign that aims to encourage governments to improve their food policies in support of better public health.

Basically you can get involved by signing the Food Revolution petition, registering your school as a Food Revolution school to download some brilliant teaching materials and join in with Jamie's exclusive cooking lesson on Food Revolution Day. Or if you're famous or worth knowing, you can sign up as an ambassador.

This is of course a global incentive, but on a more local level, Sydney based mums have gone one step further and not only created schools and child care based cooking classes, but have now launched a cooking subscription that allows families to Get Kids Cooking @ Home.

Get Kids Cooking is an Australian enterprise run by foodie mums Joanne Bowskill and Holly Boal. The launched their brand new Get Kids Cooking @ Home subscription at the Royal Easter Show this year.

The new Get Kids Cooking @ Home subscription aims to give parents and kids the inspiration and wherewithal to learn core cookery skills and healthy cooking at home through creative culinary fun in the kitchen! It's delivered to homes in an exciting box, containing that month's gastronomic goodies.

Designed to give inspiration and instruction to both kids and adults, the box contains step-by-step recipe and activity ideas, a monthly cooking tool or utensil, a key ingredient to discover and helpful skill card to teach kids (and parents) the art of things like peeling and whisking!

Since starting Get Kids Cooking, Joanne Bowskill and Holly Boal have been making huge strides into teaching thousands of kids how to cook and appreciate healthy and nutritious home-made food through their popular classes held in schools and vacation care services around Sydney.

Having identified a need to service the wider community, they have gone one step further by creating the Get Kids Cooking @ Home subscription to help children develop their cooking skills, while taking part in some enjoyable activity time with their parents, siblings and friends.

"For many Australians, cooking is a real pleasure and a genuine lifestyle interest as well as a necessary and useful life skill", says Bowskill. "Once kids get into cooking, they really love it. Through activities and step-by-step recipes, our aim is simply to encourage kids and their parents to have fun in the kitchen together".

"As well as being fun, fostering a love of cooking in young kids can lead to many social and health benefits, including increasing their attention levels at school and teaching them the nutritional value of fresh fruit and vegetables. Being involved in the preparation of a meal can help to stimulate a child's appetite to try new things, expand their palette and be more open to a wider range of tastes", she said.
