Harmony Day
March 21st

Dig out orange clothing & accessories

This is your advanced orange warning that March 21 is Harmony day and you'll need to find some suitably orange attire for your child.

Whether it's a full on orange outfit, T-shirt, pants or just an orange accessory, you'll need to dig it out in order for your child to celebrate Australia's cultural diversity.

Harmony Day celebrates 15 years this year. This uniquely Australian day is held every year on the same day to coincide with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The message of Harmony Day is that everyone belongs. It's a day to celebrate Australia's diversity - a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home.

Harmony Day is celebrated all across Australia and is all about teaching everyone the importance of inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Since Harmony Day started in 2000 tens of thousands of events have been held in all sorts of institutions, from the smallest child care centres to the largest businesses.

Cultural Diversity Facts and figures

Did you know that:
  • Around 45 per cent of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was
  • 85 per cent of Australians agree multiculturalism has been good for Australia
  • Apart from English the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese, Greek, Vietnamese, Tagalog/Filipino, Spanish and Hindi
  • More than 60 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia
  • 92 per cent of Australians feel a great sense of belonging to our country?
These facts are taken from ABS 2011 Census Data. Check out the Australian Bureau of Statistics website and the Mapping Social Cohesion National Report 2014 from the Scanlon Foundation website.

This year, the organisers of Harmony Day would like to encourage as many schools and child care centres as possible to get involved and host a Harmony Day event.

The Harmony Day website has lots of ideas for your own event, plus tips, educational resources and much more. Keep updated on all things Harmony Day via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

If you are hosting your own Harmony event, don't forget to live tweet and post using #harmonyday.
