Educational Philosophy
Personal beliefs and Interests
As an early childhood educator, I model respect, empathy, patience, and care for the children and the families that I come into contact with. I believe that all children and families have the rights to have an equal education, which allows their needs met, supports their interests, growth, and development.
My educational philosophy is based on a variety of theorists, including, but not limited to the works of Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, Urie Bronfenbrenner and Reggio Emilia. I believe that children benefit from practices that are grounded in a variety of research.
I have a strong interest and passion towards the promotion of equity and inclusion within educational settings. This passion is driven by my own experiences and of my own children’s Indigenous heritage, culture and practices.
I have completed previous studies in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Indigenous and multicultural education, as well as a strong back ground in Australian history, and its continued impacts on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
I am respectful and sensitive to these issues; I recognise the importance of involving families and communities when engaging in practices of culture, language and knowledge.
Environment and inclusion
I strive to create a classroom that is inclusive to the needs of all children and their families. I view inclusive and competent environments as places that promote a sense of trust, respect for diversity, equity, fairness and social justice.
I am respectful and open to cultural perspectives that may differ from my own; I strive to provide an environment that is inclusive of the children’s culture, interests, developmental levels, needs, beliefs and values.
Curriculum & Children’s competencies
My goal as a teacher is to provide children with a rich, warm environment where they feel safe to explore, initiate learning, and feel free to express themselves. It is my belief that children become more motivated to learn when they have opportunities to be involved in experiences that are enriching and stimulating. By providing this type of environment children become more engaged in their learning, and therefore gain a hunger to learn and explore.
My role as an early childhood educator is to be a facilitator. I endeavour to guide and scaffold children’s learning by providing them with enriching experiences that are challenging, yet attainable. I facilitate children’s learning through the emergent curriculum, as well as in depth studies and projects that are of interest to children. This approach allows children to build upon their current knowledge and schemas, while complementing their levels of development.
Children, Families & communities
As an educator, I believe that the relationships formed between educators, children, families and communities are the essential foundation for care and wellbeing. I seek to form close relationships with each child, and their families under my care. I aim to incorporate in my educational programming community input and resources, as well as home family rituals, cultural practices, beliefs and values that are valued by each family.
I view each child and family as a unique and strive to provide an environment where children and families from different cultural backgrounds feel welcomed and accepted.
