Simple hands-on science projects are a wonderful way to engage preschool children in STEM and to nurture a lifelong interest in learning through exploration and experimentation.
This week we've selected nine simple science projects to try with the children in your early childhood service.
Marbled milk paper – create gorgeous marbled designs with this very hands-on activity which will be interesting to children of most ages.
Oobleck – Like slime but better, slippery and squishy and easy to make. Children love this weird and wonderful stuff!
Swimming spaghetti – make uncooked spaghetti do tricks with this fun and fizzy experiment.
Dancing balloons – This simple interactive activity demonstrates the idea of a vortex, through balloons dancing and hovering in mid air.
Layered liquids – Like an oil and vinegar salad dressing, but with colours and textures to add variation. This is a great experiment to lead talk about weight and density.
Ice sculptures – Ideal for a warm day, this melting ice experiment offers plenty of hands-on opportunities for creativity.
Ooey gooey oily art – Create brightly coloured masterpieces while exploring the scientific ideas of density, polarity, viscosity and more.
Floaters and sinkers – The name says it all, fill a basin with water and experiment with a wide variety of objects. Cheap, easy and very satisfying for children of all ages.
Rainbow wizard's brew – Foamy and colourful this fantastic experiment combines vinegar and baking soda to great effect and is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
These amazing science projects and lots more are available on Babble Dabble Do, Boys' Life and The Artful Parent.
