Why child care services need insurance

We are often asked how insurance works when childcare services attend excursions, events and do fundraising.

Let's look at Fantastic Childcare as an example of why you need insurance for excursions, events and fundraising.

Fantastic Childcare wants to do some face painting down at their local shopping centre to raise funds and promote their service. The shopping centre agrees on the basis that the service has public liability insurance. Why?

The shopping centre has their own insurance, but it won't cover Fantastic Childcare if the fundraising and promotional activities cause injury or property damage.

Example One
While applying face paint, a staff member accidentally pokes the child in the eye. The child is injured and has to be taken to hospital. A claim could be made against Fantastic Childcare for injury to the child.

Example Two
A child gets hold of some paint and splashes it all over the place. Some of the paint splashes on some clothing on a rack outside the clothing shop and stains the clothing.

The clothing shop could make a claim against Fantastic Childcare for damage to their property.

In some circumstances, Insurers may restrict the Events, Fundraising and Excursions that you participate in, which may affect coverage in the examples listed above. We recommend that you contact your insurance adviser prior to organising or attending events to ensure that you have the insurance protection you need.
