Jenny's ELC - Heathcote Centre overview
Phone
(03) 5486 0232With strong links to the local community, this modern child care centre in Heathcote is the first in the area. Caring for children from 6 weeks all the way up to 6 years, it opened in 2019 and is part of the Heathcote Children's Hub Bunbanarik.
Outside, the multi-age play areas allow children of all ages to explore the space together. There are sandpits, mud pits, veggie gardens, and climbing frames to enjoy.
Set between two heritage listed buildings, this centre is just a short drive to Heathcote Primary School and is open from 6:30am to 6:30pm. The centre and gardens were built with the help of volunteers and local residents, who were passionate about the children of the area having quality education available in their town.
The philosophy that drives Jenny’s Early Learning Centre Heathcote is that learning is a part of the fun. Children are encouraged to explore their own interests while they learn.
The key values are as follows:
- Educators
Consistency of care is paramount, and priority is given to nurturing the relationships between educators and children. Many of the passionate educators are locals, and have been with the centre since it opened. Educators help children develop the skills of independence, confidence, responsibility and connection with others.
- Community
Local relationships are a key focus for Jenny’s Early Learning Centre Heathcote, from primary schools, sporting clubs, to the suppliers for the kitchen. The centre sees these connections as a way to facilitate a sense of belonging and identity for the children, as well as being a way to develop their social skills.
- Children
A child is broadly connected to their family, community, culture and place, with the interactions between each providing a sense of self. Children develop and learn through these connections, with family being the first and most influential educators. The centre understands that children learn through play and that they find their own sense of identity and understanding of the world at their own pace.
- Families
To ensure the best possible outcomes for children, Jenny’s Early Learning Centre Heathcote believes that families and educators need to be working closely together. The educators welcome input from families to help guide the curriculum based on each child’s interests and family heritage. The centre is a welcoming and respectful environment which teaches children how to work with others and to value their own independence.

About the curriculum
About the curriculum
6 weeks -2 years
The educators work on physical goals for the children such as walking, sitting, crawling, and running. They help them to develop a sense of belonging, a sense of their own identity and to build their confidence. In this group, language skills and self help skills are beginning to develop, so the educators focus on extending those. They types of activities they are exposed to include art experiences, singing and dancing, stories, sensory play, sandpit, bubbles, climbing and balancing, and local community excursions in the pram.
2 years – 3 years
For this age group there is a strong focus on self help, language, sharing, social skills and creating friendships. For the toddlers, they can enjoy art experiences, singing and dancing, stories, sensory play, sandpit, climbing and balancing, local community excursions, gardening and some basic cooking.
3 years – 5 years
These children are encouraged to build self help skills, develop friendships, work on some pre-writing and reading skills, and begin letter recognition. The children take part in science experiments, reading stories, fun group games, sandpit, ball games, riding bikes, construction, cooking, gardening, and lots of community excursions. These children are working on their school readiness goals, such as regulating emotions, building confidence and social skills.
5 years – 12 years
In this room, the centre offers Vacation Care for school aged children.
Programs
Programs
Children are cared for, nurtured and kept safe, while also being challenged to find new ways to learn. The centre’s program is based on their ‘Play – Explore – Learn’ philosophy, which helps children feel challenged and engaged with learning.
PLAY
- Gross motor skills program: organised physical activities such as ball games, parachutes, running, jumping, and other activities that help develop coordination.
- Self-directed play: helps children form friendships, develop imagination and try out new ideas. The centre is filled with natural light, and the indoor and outdoor spaces are open for exploration.
- Outdoor play spaces: all designed to suit each age group. Children can get their hands dirty in the veggie patch, explore the sensory garden, climb on the equipment, and play imaginary games with their friends.
EXPLORE
- Regular excursions and incursions: the centre is well connected with the community, taking part in regular walks to the post office, Barrack Reserve play space, and the Bunbanarik Children's Hub.
- Cottage garden: children are encouraged to get involved with planting seeds and seedlings, tending to the plants, and helping to pick them for the centre chef to use. They also learn about water conservation and sustainability.
LEARN
- Technology: children can explore new ideas, problem solve, and work together to find solutions. Some of the technology offered includes computers and iPads, educational apps and games to develop literacy and numeracy skills, as well as digital cameras.
Health & nutrition
Health & nutrition
Jenny’s Early Learning Centre Heathcote supports local business by sourcing their ingredients from suppliers in the area, using organic produce where possible.
The in-house chef uses the local produce to create high quality meals and snacks for the children, taking into account any food intolerances, allergies or cultural considerations. Menus are prepared in conjunction with the centre’s own paediatric dietician.
The children are given the chance to help with planting and harvesting produce from the veggie garden, as part of the ‘seed to plate’ program. The fruits, vegetables and herbs are then used by the chef to create the food for the centre. The children are given breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and a late snack.

Centre Reviews
Bad PR. But seems to be common for Jenny's early learning centres in Bendigo region. Don't think I'd take my kids here.
